New Study Shows Textured Breast Implants Reduce Risk of Capsular Contracture

A recent study presented at the 12th annual Toronto Breast Surgery Symposium found that using textured breast implants instead of smooth breast implants will substantially reduce the risk of capsular contracture. In fact, the capsular contracture rate was reduced to 1% for patients in this study who used textured implants.

Capsular contracture is one of the most common breast augmentation complications. While it can occur at any time, it most commonly develops within the first few months after the procedure.

When breast implants are placed in your body, a lining is formed around the implant. When capsular contracture occurs, this lining tightens and squeezes the breast implant. As a result, the breast implant feels hard and develops a distorted appearance. The condition can be quite painful, and breast augmentation revision surgery is required to correct it.

While the cause of capsular contracture is not entirely known, common factors which may increase your risk of developing this condition include:

  • Bacterial contamination
  • Breast implant rupture
  • Leakage of silicone gel implant filling
  • Hematoma

Along with using textured breast implants, another way to reduce your risk of capsular contracture is to choose sub-muscular breast implant placement. With this method, your breast implant is placed underneath the chest muscle. Philadelphia breast augmentation surgeon Dr. Bottger typically recommends submuscular placement with most of his patients.

Dr. Bottger has more than 20 years of experience performing breast augmentation procedures and during that time, he has experienced a very low complication rate. Dr. Bottger takes every precaution necessary to ensure your breast augmentation is performed according to the highest levels of safety.

Visualization Techniques for Determining the Right Breast Implant Size

One of the most important decisions you will have to make regarding your breast augmentation procedure involves choosing the right size implant. In order to achieve beautiful, natural looking results, you will want to choose a breast implant size that is appropriate for your body proportions and fits with your lifestyle.

Remember, bigger is not always better. If you lead an active lifestyle or have a petite frame, you may achieve better results by choosing a more modest-sized breast implant. The best way to determine the ideal implant size for your unique body type and aesthetic goals is to schedule a consultation at our Philadelphia plastic surgery office.

There are certain things you can try at home if you would like to get a better understanding of how you may look with larger breasts before attending a consultation with Dr. Bottger. The most common of these techniques is the “rice test.”

To perform the rice test, fill a pair of cut-off pantyhose with rice and try them on underneath a sports bra. The following conversions will help you determine the approximate volume for your breast implant:

  • ¼ cup = 59 cc
  • ½ cup = 118 cc
  • ¾ cup = 177 cc
  • 1 cup = 236 cc

You can add combinations of these amounts to arrive at your desired size.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Bottger will provide you with breast implant sizers to help you choose the ideal size implant for your goals. These sizers are implant-like devices that can be placed underneath your bra to help you get a better idea as to what your final results will look like.

Keep in mind that these visualization techniques are just approximations, and your final results will most likely look similar to, but not exactly like, what you see here. Factors such as the amount of natural breast tissue present, the shape of your chest wall, and your body anatomy will impact your results in ways that cannot be entirely accounted for using these visualization techniques.

With more than 20 years of experience performing breast augmentation procedures in the Philadelphia area, Dr. Bottger understands how to choose the ideal breast implant size to achieve the best results for your unique body type. He will work closely with you to arrive at the right sized breast implant to deliver the beautiful, natural looking outcome you desire.
