New Trends in Breast Augmentation

As breast augmentation continues to rise in popularity, innovative new methods are being developed to improve the appearance of your breasts. According to Philadelphia breast augmentation surgeon, Dr. David Bottger, this has led to a number of new trends in breast augmentation. Some of the most common include:

  • Breast augmentation using fat transfer – If you would rather not use breast implants to increase the size of your breasts, you may want to consider a fat transfer procedure. Liposuction will be used to remove excess fat from a donor region such as your hips, thighs, or abdomen. This fat will be processed and injected into your breasts. Fat transfer results in less scarring and a more natural feel than breast implants. You also benefit from the body sculpting benefits of liposuction. However, only about 50-60% of the fat transferred remains in your breasts. The rest is reabsorbed by your body.
  • Vectra 3D imaging – Vectra 3D imaging can provide you with a digital three-dimensional image of what your new breasts will look like. This can help you discuss your goals more clearly with Dr. Bottger, and it helps establish realistic expectations for the outcome of your breast augmentation procedure.
  • Gummy bear implants – The FDA has recently approved gummy bear implants. This new type of implant is soft, yet holds its shape better than saline and silicone breast implants. They come in a tear-drop shape which prevents bulging at the top of your breast. For many women, gummy bear implants will provide a more natural looking alternative to more traditional implant options such as saline and silicone.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants Receive FDA Approval

Philadelphia Surgeon Announces Gummy Bear Breast Implants Receive FDA Approval

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved a new type of breast implant for use with breast augmentation and breast reconstruction procedures. It has commonly been referred to as the “gummy bear implant” due to its soft feel and ability to hold its shape.

Gummy bear implants are made of a cohesive gel material which retains its shape much better than silicone and saline breast implants. They are also less likely to leak, fold, or ripple. Gummy bear breast implants are shaped in a teardrop style, providing a more sloped shape than is achieved by other types of breast implants. These factors allow gummy bear implants to deliver a more natural look and feel than is currently experienced using saline or silicone.

Ideal candidates for gummy bear implants are women with little to no natural breast tissue and women who experience some degree of breast asymmetry. These new breast implants are available in a variety of sizes, and each size has 12 different configurations regarding bust projection, fullness, and height.

The FDA evaluated a 7-year study including approximately 1,000 women before approving gummy bear implants for use in breast augmentation procedures. The data from this long term study demonstrated that these breast implants are both safe and effective. In addition, gummy bear implants have been used overseas for many years, and have demonstrated a strong safety record.
