Pregnancy Considerations and Breast Augmentation

If you are considering breast augmentation but have not ruled out future pregnancies, there are some things you will want to keep in mind. First and foremost, the size and shape of your breasts will change during pregnancy. While this process should not impact the integrity of your breast implants, it can cause permanent changes to the appearance of your chest. Depending on the amount of stretching that takes place during your pregnancy, a breast lift may be required to maintain your results. This is something best determined by board-certified Philadelphia breast augmentation surgeon Dr. David Bottger.

One of the largest concerns future mothers share about breast augmentation is how it will impact breastfeeding. The truth is, there is no reason breastfeeding with implants should be difficult, but certain steps can be taken to greatly reduce potential complications.

To help guard against difficulties, Dr. Bottger may recommend placing your breast implants underneath the muscles in the chest. This placement helps prevent compression of milk ducts and protect proper flow between ductal tissue and the nipple. Dr. Bottger may also recommend avoiding periareolar incisions as these can, in some instances, diminish nipple sensitivity.

If you have future plans for pregnancy or have simply not ruled the option out, discuss the possibility openly with Dr. Bottger during your initial consultation. This will ensure your procedure is customized to meet your specific needs.

What is the Best Age for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is an ideal way to improve the size, shape, symmetry, and profile of your chest. If you are over the age of 18 and unhappy with the appearance of your breasts, now may very well be the best age for you to consider breast augmentation. This is something that can be determined during a one-on-one consultation with board-certified Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. David Bottger.

Silicone breast implants cannot be placed in women under the age of 22. If you are considering breast augmentation before that age, your breast implant options will be limited. This is not to suggest that women under the age of 22 are not good candidates for breast augmentation, but those who would benefit more from silicone implants might find waiting a better option.

Another important consideration to make before committing to breast augmentation is your future plans for pregnancy. If you plan to have children in the future, Dr. Bottger can design your procedure to help prevent interference with breastfeeding, though changes to the appearance of your breasts may be unavoidable during pregnancy and while nursing.

The best way to learn if breast augmentation is right for you at your current age is by having a frank discussion with our board-certified plastic surgeon. Your comprehensive initial consultation will allow Dr. Bottger to answer your questions, discuss your options, and assist you in choosing what can best help you reach your goals.
