FDA Approves Teardrop-Shaped Silicone Breast Implants by Mentor

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new type of silicone gel breast implant called MemoryShape. The implant, made by Mentor, utilizes a teardrop shape in order to provide more fullness in the lower half of the implant and more closely mirror the shape of a natural breast.

Mentor’s MemoryShape breast implant was approved after 6 years of data were analyzed, indicating the implant meets all safety and efficacy standards required by the FDA. The use of silicone gel in these breast implants increases their ability to retain their shape.

This is the 5th silicone breast implant approved by the FDA for use in breast augmentation procedures. This provides women with greater choices, especially considering the fact that the overwhelming majority of breast augmentation patients prefer silicone implants over saline implants. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 72% of the 330,631 breast augmentation procedures performed in the United States in 2012 used silicone implants. This percentage has been steadily increasing in recent years due to the fact that silicone breast implants deliver results which look and feel more natural.
