Silicone Breast Implants Most Popular Option by Overwhelming Margin

Ever since being re-approved by the FDA in 2006, silicone breast implants have grown steadily in popularity. According to data provided by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, silicone breast implants were only used in 20% of breast augmentation procedures in 2006. But that figure has steadily increased each year and by 2012, 72% of women opted for silicone implants.

Silicone breast implants were initially banned by the FDA in the early 1990s due to safety concerns. However, after nearly a decade and a half of research and improvements, silicone implants were reintroduced to the market with no evidence that they pose a safety risk to women.

In all likelihood, the primary reason for their meteoric rise in popularity over the past few years is their ability to achieve a more natural looking and feeling result than saline breast implants. This emphasis on natural looking results has also led to the development and recent FDA-approval of “gummy bear implants.” These breast implants consist of a cohesive gel material that retains its shape better than both saline and silicone implants, enabling them to achieve extremely natural looking results.

It will be interesting to see how the introduction of gummy bear implants impacts the popularity of saline and silicone options in years to come.
