Study Reveals Breastfeeding Doesn’t Adversely Impact Breast Appearance

One of the most common questions new breast augmentation patients ask Dr. Bottger during their initial consultation at his Philadelphia plastic surgery office involves the impact of breastfeeding on breast appearance. While it may seem logical that breastfeeding would have a negative impact on the appearance of your breasts, a new study has actually found the exact opposite to be true.

A recent study conducted by a plastic surgeon working at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Ohio evaluated more than 150 pairs of identical twins in order to determine how a variety of external factors impact breast appearance when genetic factors were controlled for.

While twins who had breastfed in the past generally had less attractive areolar size and shape, they experienced better skin quality than their sisters who never breastfed. This finding seems to indicate that the hormones released during breastfeeding may actually improve the skin quality and therefore overall breast appearance.

Clinical data has long demonstrated that breast augmentation rarely impacts a woman’s ability to safely breastfeed in the future. However, breastfeeding may negatively impact your breast augmentation results, even if it does not adversely affect the appearance of unaugmented breasts. Therefore, it is important to discuss your future pregnancy plans with Dr. Bottger before undergoing breast augmentation.

Other findings from the identical twin breast study included:

  • Twins who moisturized their skin daily experienced fewer breast wrinkles
  • Twins who received hormone replacement therapy following menopause experienced a more attractive breast size, shape, and projection
  • Twins with a high body mass index, larger cup sizes, and who went through a greater number of pregnancies had saggy, droopier breasts
  • Twins who smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol regularly had less attractive breasts
